What are the different types of networks? Explain detail.

Computer networks are classified in different ways based on size, coverage area, and purpose. The main types of networks are explained below.

ypes of computer networks

Personal Area Network (PAN)

Personal Area Network diagram
  • A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for communication among computer and different information technological devices close to one person.
  • Is a small network established for communication between different devices such as laptops, computers, mobiles and PDAs.
  • A pan may include wired or wireless devices.
  • The range of pan is less then three meters.

Local Area Network (LAN)

local area network
  • Local area networks are one of the most frequently discussed types of computer networks.
  • They are a group of computers which are connected in a small area like an office and a building.
  • It is used for connecting two or more computers with a communication medium like coaxial cable, twisted pair, etc.
  • It is less costly and built with inexpensive hardware like network adapters, hubs, and Ethernet cables.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
  • MAN is larger than LAN.
  • It is spread across a city. Since it covers a city.
  • It is created by connecting two or more LANs located in a city.
  • It is smaller than area covered by WAN.
  • Cable television branches of a local bank in a city are common examples of MAN.

Wide Area Network (WAN)

Wide Area Network (WAN)
  • Wide area network provides long distance transmission of data.
  • The size of the WAN is larger than LAN and MAN. A WAN can cover country, continent or even a whole world.
  • Internet connection is an example of WAN. Other examples of WAN are mobile broadband connections such as 3G, 4G etc.
